BLUE MOON - Chapter 4, Excerpt 1

Gina had known long ago this was her calling. Gina was a practicing witch, a quite gifted one. She knew how difficult it was to find everything one needed to practice her craft so Gina opened up her own place so she and every other person out there looking for something different from the norm in Tulsa would have a place to go. She had opened The Mind’s Eye - New Age Book and Supply Store in Brookside about five years prior and was happy to be able to make a living at something she truly believed in and gave her the freedom to practice her craft as much as she wanted. The location was perfect and the energy in the area was truly charged for a witch like herself.

She was most proud of her own extremely rare book collection in the library, which wasn’t open to the public. The store was a nice place and for Gina being only twenty five-years-old, She felt pride for what she had accomplished. She never forgets how this all came to her though and what a loss it was at the time. Gina’s grandmother passed away from breast cancer and left Gina a sizeable life insurance policy in which Gina invested a chunk of the money into opening the store. It was almost a tribute to her beautiful grandmother’s legacy as she was a witch as well.

The shadows in the room were playing tricks on him as the house lit up with lightening and at times he felt he could see someone in the room with him. Of course he knew this couldn’t be true. Even at ten, he knew things like this didn’t happened. The most he had to be afraid of was his mother for not making it home before the storm hit.

But as the storm got more intense and the display of lightening and the subsequent boom of thunder continued its assault, Demetri started to see a dark form in the corners at first. Then he would see it coming near him and as the lightening would lay itself out across the sky lighting up the room he would no longer see the dark form. But as quick as the light dissipated, the dark form would make its way back into Demetri’s line of vision. He was getting scared by this and was starting to think he was not just seeing trickster shadows, but rather a ghost like he would see if the horror movies he watched. His nerves were on edge and his heart was racing.

It was his tenth birthday and still early in the day. He didn’t have to be back home until his birthday party at six when all his cousins and other family members would get together. Demetri was playing down at Mertyl’s old place pretending to be a witch. The characters he assumed changed all the time but they usually had something to do with the supernatural or some horror movie he would sneak out of bed and watch.

Demetri stood outside, feeling nature around him; he was aware of the darkness in the far background of the sky and knew a storm was heading his way. Demetri, still stuck in the innocence of his youth taunted the storm. Concentrating hard on getting it to focus on him so he could fight back as he stood with his arms stretched out to his sides, head leaned back looking up into the sky. He yelled out, “I command you; I summon you to send forth the winds.”

To his delight the winds picked up a bit. Feeling the wind start to flow around him, blow through his hair, only enhanced the realness of what was supposed to be a make-believe play session.

“I command you to send forth lightening,” Demetri yelled with all his might, concentrating hard on controlling the lightening. Once again to his delight the skies started to light up with the flash of lightening. Then the thunder came. As all of these things started to come into play time, as if on his command, Demetri’s confidence grew in the character he had chosen for the day.

Demetri grew up in a small rural farming community in Oklahoma. He was raised in nature and felt that's why he had such a big appreciation for all things natural. Superstitions ran deep in rural communities, some coming across as old wives’ tales, others in natural remedies and some just downright mystical. There was a huge Native American community all around where he grew up in Braggs and some of their traditions ran just as deep today as they did hundreds of years ago.

Growing up in Tulsa had been a real trip for Alex. He was so different from his classmates and often was taunted for these differences. He never really fit in at school and was often considered an outcast. His father left when he was a child; he didn’t have many memories of him. His mother did the best she could for him but was always a bit distant. She was a decent mother who always made sure he had what he needed, but she was just distant most of the time. His father leaving really took a toll on her that she never quite recovered from. His last memory of his father was of him yelling at his mother but it was hard to remember about what. Sometimes memories come to him and it seems as if he was yelling at her about Alex and about how he wasn’t going to stand by and watch this happen to his son…but the memory would pass and he would wonder if it was even real. And what would he have been talking about anyway, “watch this happen to his son?”

“Join me or watch the world suffer the same fate as these underworld beings,” commanded the man only inches from where Demetri was suspended in air. As the man pulled his arm a little closer to his body, Demetri in return was pulled closer. The man’s lips pursed as he pulled Demetri in and gave him a kiss. What was this man’s game?

Reading Demetri’s mind the man shouted, “All in good time. Now wake the fuck up,” as he hurled Demetri backwards in the air.

Demetri opened his eyes just before his body hit the wall in his bedroom. As he crashed into the wall, he felt the pain ripple through his body while he fell onto his bed, bouncing off the mattress and hitting the floor. Gasping for air and feeling blood dripping down the back of his head onto his neck, Demetri struggled to get up onto his feet, righting himself. He had dreams before, but none like this. Was he actually levitating when he woke up from the dream? His mind was reeling, his head and body aching. What the fuck had just happened?

“You think these creatures that fill children’s nightmares, those hiding in the dark can save you,” the man questioned. This time he wasn’t smiling but looking at Demetri with impatience. “These creatures of your underworld cannot help you; they are a disgrace, a wasted speck of demon blood not worthy to be let past the doors of hell,” the man shouted with a disgusted, angry voice, his lips pursed in a snarl.

“I can wipe these creatures out with just a whisper if I cared,” sneered the man as if taunting the creatures still hiding in the dark.

Right on cue with the man’s insults, Demetri began seeing glowing eyes lighting up in the darkness. The taunting worked because Demetri heard rustling in the brushes.

The man stepped away from the wall and advanced towards Demetri. He was still nude and as he came closer, Demetri could see his body was covered from head to toe with the most exquisite tattoos he had ever seen. Skeleton heads graced his hips, with bats and serpents on his arms. A zombie looking creature covered his leg, and an extremely large face attached to a body wrapped around from his back across his torso onto his stomach which could only be described as a giant, maybe a troll, with large yellow eyes and yellow sharp teeth. The man was only five feet from Demetri when he stopped and looked amusingly at Demetri. It may have been from the awe he saw on Demetri’s face, or the way Demetri was looking him up and down as if he were a walking art exhibit. He is art, a beautiful walking art exhibit with stunning dark eyes, dark hair and a face that drew you in closer than you ever thought you wanted to be.

Demetri ran down the unlit street, sweat dripping from his face, his breathing labored, and his heart racing. How uncanny he found himself running, running for his life, running scared, when it had been so many years since he had feared anything. But this fear inside him, this head splitting fear would not subside. His powers failed him here. All around him darkness, and them. Those who held to the shadows, those who dare not reveal themselves sank deeper into the dark. He could hear their whispers, their thoughts and they all were saying the same thing in unison “He is coming and we will all die, He is coming and we will all die.”

These creatures of the night, creatures of the shadows steered clear of Demetri. They feared his abilities, but tonight they feared something much worse. For the supernatural world to run in fear and to share that fear with Demetri is new. They needed Demetri to protect them, but from what. “He is coming and we will all die.”

Prologue

Screaming as she was ripped back from her vision, tears filled the wretched looking woman’s eyes. Torture for over three hours had given way to information which held the attention of all in the room.

"You will fail demon. You who claim to be all powerful will find your demise by the hand which is closest to you. So much death, so much death, all because of power and greed and in the end it will be for naught. You who walk this earth when it is not right to do so. You don’t belong here. Darkness fills the land as it fills my dreams, but the darkness has an end. You will die demon, maybe not in the true sense of the word, but you will leave this world and be banished back into your own. You will rot there as it should be and the world will rebuild itself, it will see the light again,” the old woman moaned as she spoke through her pain. “But just as you will meet your death in this world, you will have an opportunity to come back; a small window of time in which you will meet the biggest threat you will ever face. Three thousand years this world will have to build itself up again, three thousand years you will have to wait in your hellish confines before you are able to attempt to be born again. When the moon shines blue, you will be able to cross over, if you have the power to do so. Three sacrifices will be required for your journey, but beware demon; the powers that kill you in this world are not dead in the new world. Now kill me, for I will tell you no more.” She screeched as she spat bloody spit at his feet.

The man whom the demon embodied reached over and snapped the old woman’s neck knowing she had told him all she would. She fell to the ground dead.

The demon turned to the two men in the room, two of his most trusted confidants. “I have no reason to believe this oracle is not telling the truth, so listen to me as if your life depended on it. If and when I meet my death here in this world, you will prepare for me a way back. You will keep this from the world, from prying eyes who would deny me what is mine. You will silently build an army, an army to infiltrate every aspect of this life, to know everything which might work against me. You will be brave, you will be strong, you will be deadly and you will be called Balashon.”
